JAMES FREDERICK ORFF
James F. Orff was born November 1, 1926 in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, and was the son of Frederick Joseph Orff and Grace Mary McConaghy Orff. He died on February 23, 2019 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
His family moved from the city to Far Rockaway on Long Island, New York. As a young man, Jim enjoyed being a lifeguard on the beaches of Far Rockaway. Jim then joined the U. S. Army in 1945. While stationed at Camp Carson in Colorado Springs, he met the love of his life, Juanita Sanchez at a USO dance. Jim and Juanita were married on November 27, 1948 and continued their life together in Colorado Springs, raising 5 children.
Jim retired from the U. S. Postal Service where he worked as a Postal Clerk. Jim founded the Colorado Springs Post Office Blood Bank in the 1950’s, which served many Post Office families in their time of need. He also was active with the Pikes Peak Credit Union, where he served as a member of the Credit Committee for several years.
Through the years, Jim was active in Corpus Christi Catholic Church. He served as president of the Men’s Club, and was a weekly Usher and Lector. In the later years of his life, he attended several Bible study classes in order to enhance his love and understanding of God’s Word. Jim also enjoyed Masters Level swimming and tennis. He served as a Hospice volunteer, providing respite care for caregivers and being a companion to those on their journey to their final reward.
Jim had a love for reading and poetry. His poetry flowed as he thought, reflected, and prayed. Many of his spontaneous poems were given to those he observed as they went about their daily lives. He truly found pleasure in his poetry, and it gave deep meaning to his life.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and by his siblings, Edwin, Bernadette, Rita, Rosemary Krulish, Grace Garry, and Freida Rodgers. Jim is survived by his 5 children, Christina Brims, Cecelia German (Guy), Edward Orff (Kathy), MaryFrances Sedlacek (Robert), and MaryGrace Stutzman (Charles); 8 granddaughters; 13 great-grandchildren; nephews, Jim Garry, and Tom Garry; and niece, Maryellen Wallace.
