Joe Arthur MatthewAugust 2, 1934 ~ October 16, 2019 (age 85)
Joe Arthur Matthew, 85, of Colorado Springs, CO, formerly of Rush, Divide, and Manitou Springs, CO, and Rogers, AR, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2019, following a two-year struggle with cancer. Joe was born on July 2, 1934, in Wichita, KS, to Leonard and Margaret (Waitman) Matthew. He married his best friend and the love of his life, Patricia Bassham, on December 12, 1953, in Mountainburg, AR. They were blessed with four children: John, Linda, David and Savrah. The early years of their marriage were spent in Rogers, AR. In 1973, drawn by the beauty of the mountains and the drier climate, they moved their family to Manitou Springs, CO. Joe and Pat later moved to the mountains near Divide, CO. Some years after Pat’s death, Joe, then in his 70’s, built a home on his “farm” near Rush, CO, where he could live “off the grid.” Joe was a skilled brick mason, working very hard to provide well for his family. Many buildings, from Rogers, AR, to Wichita, KS, to Colorado Springs, CO, and in between, bear witness to his handiwork. Joe was also an inventor, skilled tinkerer, woodcarver, and photographer. He loved to capture the beauty of nature with his camera and the ironies of life in his woodcarvings, and enjoyed observing and interacting with wildlife. He also loved to regale family and friends with his stories. He is greatly missed by his family. Joe is survived by children, John (Debbie) Matthew of Wichita, KS; Linda Forrest, David Matthew (Kelly), and Savrah Kushner, all of Colorado Springs,CO; 8 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; and brother, Bruce Matthew of Rogers, AR. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; parents, Leonard and Margaret, brother, Leonard Matthew, Jr.; granddaughter, Genevieve Sucharski, and great-grandchildren, Julian Schuler and Jaydria Hendrickson. A memorial service and gathering of family and friends was held on Saturday, October 19 in Colorado Springs, CO. Joe’s ashes will be interred at a graveside service in Benton County Memorial Park, Rogers, AR, on Saturday, October 26, at 10:30 a.m.
