John Cunico

John Joseph Cunico, 69, a resident of Colorado Springs for 41 years, Johnny passed November 23, 2018 after a brief illness at St Francis Hospital.

He was born in Trinidad and raised in the mining community of Sopris, Colorado to Louis and Angelina Cunico on December 15, 1948.  Johnny married Jolene (Glorioso) in June 1969. They raised one daughter, Danette (Marty Grantz) and a son, Brian (Anne Beery). He was especially proud to be a grandfather to Nick Grantz and Will Grantz. Johnny is also survived by his younger brother, Robert, of Richmond, CA.

Johnny graduated from Trinidad High and attended Colorado State University, Adams State College and earned his teaching certificate from Southern Colorado State College. He spent his entire 30-year teaching career in Colorado Springs School District 11. He taught junior high typing and business at South and Sabin before leading the Tech Lab at Jenkins Middle School. He coached enormously successful basketball teams at both South and Sabin.

Johnny was a life-long, die-hard, Denver Broncos fan, a long-time season-ticket holder and attended several Super Bowls. He witnessed several other major sporting events as a sales associate for NCAA apparel. Johnny enjoyed family, Italian food, golf, collecting sports memorabilia, fantasy football and attending his grandsons’ sporting events. Johnny’s favorite music was Earth, Wind and Fire and he was an accomplished musician, playing trumpet and keyboards in the Piece Core Rock Band in high school.  Johnny loved to travel the world with Jolene and made frequent Las Vegas excursions with his friends.

A loving coach, educator, husband, father and grandfather – Johnny will be greatly missed by his family and his community.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at Our Lady of the Pines at 11:00 a.m.  Please wear Broncos attire.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Liver Foundation by clicking here.
