Mary Kathryn Gonser, 94, passed away peacefully October 29, 2018 in Colorado Springs. She was born in April of 1924 in Pueblo, Colorado to Helen and Samuel Shaffer. She had two brothers, Buell and Samuel who are both still living. Her sister, Ernestine, died as a toddler.
Mary graduated Olney Springs High School and married David Gonser in 1941 before he deployed to New Caledonia in the US Navy during World War II. They started their family on a farm in Crowley County and were one of the first families to live on the US Air Force Academy. They were long term residents of Palmer Lake where they bought the original post office and remodeled it into a home for their 8 children. All of their children graduated from Lewis Palmer schools and Mary and David eventually moved to Colorado Springs. Mary was the mother of 8, grandmother of 17 and great grandmother of 26. She was married to David for 72 years until he passed away in 2013. She made many friends in her senior living facility and was loved by staff and residents.
She was active in the Little Log Church and directed the choir for many years. Additionally, she worked in the school lunch program at Lewis Palmer. She was an excellent cook and well known for family holiday parties and picnics. She loved music and sewing and made many gifts for her family over the years. She enjoyed many trips in their motor home and they traveled the length of both coasts as well as to Alaska. She created many happy memories for her family and will be missed.
Friends and family can send flowers or make donations to Pikes Peak Hospice. Burial will be at Ft. Logan National Cemetery Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at 2:15 pm Staging area B
