George SimsJuly 13, 1941 ~ January 24, 2020 (age 78)
On Friday, January 24, 2020 CMSgt George J. (Joe) Sims, USAF, (Ret.) passed away quietly at Pikes Peak Hospice at Penrose Hospital.
Joe Sims was born in Carrizo Springs, TX to George Bailey and Lillian Adele Sims. He spent his childhood outdoors playing ball, riding bikes, and fishing with his father. He spent most of his childhood in Corpus Christi, TX and graduated from Mary Carroll High School. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.
While stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base, in California, he met and married his wife of 56 years, Cecilia Evans. Together they moved wherever the Air Force sent him during his 28-year career. He enjoyed camping, fishing, spending time with his friends and family and, whenever possible, combining the three.
After retiring from the Air Force, Joe went to work at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS) as the maintenance supervisor for Housing where he became a favorite among the students. He retired from that position in 2008.
Joe was a wonderful friend, the best father, a devoted grandfather, and a loving husband.
Joe was predeceased by his parents and sister. Just one week before his death, his beloved wife, Cecilia Sims, passed away.
Joe is survived by his daughter Jennifer Layher (Scott) and two granddaughters, Emma and Kate.
At his request no services will be held. Interment will be at Pikes Peak National Cemetery at a future date.
