Robert Lewis Griffin
1926 ~ 2016
Dr. Robert Lewis Griffin passed away peacefully on March 12, 2016 with his family by his side. He was born in rural Georgia to Edward and Lenny Ruth (Johnson) Griffin.
Robert moved to Detroit as an infant, attended and graduated school. There he met the love of his life and wife of 71+ years, Dorothy Hollingsworth, and they were married October 29, 1944. Bob joined the Army Air Corp prior to marrying. He served during World War II as a B-17 radio operator. He then attended Olivet Nazarene University and graduated with a degree in theology. He pursued his calling as a full-time minister in the Church of the Nazarene from 1950 until 1967. During his time in the ministry he earned a Master's degree in Theology from Butler University, then his Doctorate in Philosophy from Oklahoma State University. He then served as a professor and Dean of Academics at Southern Nazarene University followed by positions at Panhandle State University and Trevecca Nazarene University.
Bob is survived by his Devoted Wife Dorothy "Dot"; his children and spouses, Katherine "Kathy" & Wayne Dersch, Timothy "Tim" & Karen Griffin, and Robert Paul Griffin; grandchildren, Michelle (Dersch) & Ben Strange, Tracy (Dersch) & Ryan Owens, Slade & Julie Griffin, Tyson Jon Griffin,Allison "Allie" & Jeff Christopherson, Leonard "Lenny" Griffin, Robert "Bobby" Edward Griffin, Alicia Griffin, Daniel "Danny" Griffin and Aaron Griffin; and great grandchildren, Braden, McKenna, Joshua, Jana, Kara, John, Ethan, Cayden, Griffin James, Kaelan, Kole, Ivy, Samantha, James, Jordyn, Miah, Megan, Austin, Arielle, Zoey, Roman and Danny Jr.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, William "Bill", a sister Emily Hoskins, and a daughter, Donna.
As you can see, Bob was a devoted family man and devoted to a life of service in the church as a pastor and educator. There was never a person that he met that didn*t like him immediately, and his smile was infectious!
He will be greatly missed. "Til we meet again" ~ We Love You Dad!!
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.
